Corfu is one of the greenest Greek Islands – swathed in Olive Groves with the scent of Pine and Sea-salt in the air it’s also one of the prettiest. There are upmarket resorts in the Northeast – dubbed “Kensington on Sea” due to their popularity with Politicians and Celebrities – and lively resorts especially Kavos in the South. But there are also great Family resorts such as Sidari where the sea stays shallow for about 100 metres offshore so even toddlers can play in the water in complete safety.

Insider tip

Hire a car for the day (4x4 recommended) and head for Kerkyra – the Capital. Duck into the Museum of Asian Art and the Byzantine Museum and then find the old Cricket Pitch lined with Colonnades. Find The Liston – a great spot for a Coffee. Late morning head for Pelekas. This remote village is set on a hill with incredible views of the coast and there are great retsaurants here for lunch – we found one that served suckling pig! Then its time to go beach hunting. A small pretty beach nearby is called Yialiskari. Take the steep hill down to Pelekas beach and drive south for about 10 minutes. Once you’ve had an afternoon sunbathing here head to the Taverna for grilled fish and Greek Salad. Heaven

Events and festivals

Corfu Labour Day, which falls on the 1st of May, this includes parades and other festivities, also marks the Feast of Flowers.

Popular things to do and see and unmissable experiences

If you prefer organised excursions but still want something a bit different then take the boat trip to Albania (remember to take your Passport). After cruising from Corfu Town you will have choices as to what to do in Albania like free time or a coach trip along the coast but the highlight of your day will be the excursion to Butrint - designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1997. The ancient gymnasium, the Roman baths, the temple with mosaic floor will transport you back to a time.
